    Choosing UPS systems

    Choose a UPS by the load it must carry and how long it must carry it. The rating on the box is in VA, but the load is in watts, and runtime depends on the battery.

    VA and watts
    VA is apparent power and watts is real power. Offline and line-interactive units usually deliver about 60 to 70% of their VA rating in watts, and online units usually 80 to 90%. Add up the load in watts, choose a UPS with a higher watt rating, and keep 20 to 25% headroom.
    UPS type
    Offline and line-interactive units switch to battery when the mains fails, and line-interactive models also correct high and low voltage without using the battery. Online (double conversion) units supply the load from the inverter at all times with no transfer time, and suit servers, network equipment and sensitive loads.
    Output waveform
    A stepped (simulated) sine wave suits most PCs and monitors. Choose a pure sine wave output for power supplies with active PFC, motors, compressors and sensitive equipment.
    Runtime and external batteries
    Internal batteries give a few minutes to about fifteen minutes at full load. For longer backup choose an external-battery model, which takes extra batteries of the voltage the UPS specifies, and remember that runtime rises with battery capacity and falls as the load rises.
    Outlets and input
    Check that the output sockets or terminals suit the equipment. Larger units may need a dedicated 16 A supply and a terminal output instead of sockets.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Do not connect laser printers, photocopiers, air conditioners or other high start-up loads to a small UPS. Their start-up current is far above their running power.
    • Use a socket with a proper earth connection. Poor earthing is a common cause of UPS alarms and equipment damage.
    • Keep the UPS in a cool, ventilated place, because battery life roughly halves for every 10 °C above 25 °C. The UPS sizing calculator in Tools helps with the load sum.
    • Let a new UPS charge for the time stated in its manual before you rely on it, and test it from time to time by switching the mains off.
