Choosing IP cameras
Choose the resolution and lens for the scene first, then confirm that the recorder, switch and cabling can carry the video. The cameras here run from 12 V DC or standard PoE and connect to an NVR over Cat6.
- Resolution and bitrate
- 2 MP suits doors, counters and small rooms. Move to 4 MP, 6 MP or 8 MP for yards, car parks and long corridors where you need to enlarge part of the image. Each step up raises the stream bitrate, which adds to recorder bandwidth and storage.
- Lens and field of view
- A 2.8 mm lens gives a wider view for rooms and short distances, and a 3.6 mm lens suits doorways and gates at moderate range. Check the detect, observe, recognise and identify distances on the datasheet against the distance to your subject.
- Night vision
- IR models switch to black and white in the dark and suit yards and perimeters. Full-colour models add a visible light to keep colour at night, which suits entrances and shop floors. Rated IR range applies in open, clear conditions, so allow margin.
- Power and PoE draw
- The cameras accept 12 V DC or IEEE 802.3af PoE and draw roughly 3 to 6 W at full load. Use the maximum figure on the datasheet, not the idle figure, when you size a PoE switch or a 12 V supply.
- Recorder compatibility
- The cameras support ONVIF, so they connect to most network recorders, but functions such as smart search and event alarms work most fully with a recorder from the same maker. Check that the recorder supports the camera's resolution and H.265, and that the combined bitrate of all cameras stays within its incoming bandwidth.
- Audio and local storage
- Every model here has a built-in microphone, so switch audio off where recording sound is not intended. Models with a microSD slot keep recording if the network drops, so check the datasheet if you need that.
Installation and compatibility
- Run Cat6 from the switch to each camera, to a maximum of 100 m including patch cords. Use pure copper cable, because copper-clad aluminium has higher resistance and shortens PoE reach.
- Give each camera a fixed IP address or a DHCP reservation, and change the default password before the network is connected to the internet.
- Keep IR cameras clear of walls, glass and pillars close to the lens, which reflect infrared back and wash out the image.
- Seal outdoor cable joints and leave a drip loop below the camera so that water does not run into the connector.
