    Choosing hard drives

    Choose a hard drive by where it will run: a desktop, an external enclosure, or a recorder writing around the clock. The workload rating matters more than the capacity.

    Workload rating
    Desktop drives are designed for a few hours of use a day. Surveillance drives are designed for continuous recording and for writing several video streams at once, so use them in DVRs and NVRs. AV drives are for set-top boxes and TV recording.
    Capacity limits
    Recorders state a maximum drive size per bay, for example 6 TB, 8 TB, 16 TB or 20 TB depending on the model. Check it before you buy large drives.
    Interface and size
    Internal drives for desktops and recorders are 3.5 inch SATA, and laptops and portable drives use 2.5 inch. External drives connect over USB, and USB 3.0 or higher is much faster than USB 2.0.
    CMR or SMR
    CMR drives keep write speed steady. SMR (shingled) drives can slow sharply under long, continuous writes, so avoid them for recorders and arrays, and check the recording technology on the datasheet where it is stated.
    Camera load
    Surveillance drives state how many cameras or write streams they are designed for. Compare this with the recorder's channel count.
    Spindle speed
    5400 rpm drives run cooler and quieter, and 7200 rpm drives transfer faster. For recording, the workload rating matters more than rpm.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Use surveillance-rated drives in DVRs and NVRs for continuous recording. Format new drives in the recorder, not on a PC.
    • Plan storage from bitrate, at about 10.8 GB per day for each 1 Mbps of video. The CCTV storage calculator in Tools does the sum for a whole site.
    • Replace drives on a schedule, commonly after three to five years of continuous use, and watch SMART health warnings. Keep the recorder ventilated, because heat shortens drive life.
