    Choosing webcams, headsets and speakers

Choose a webcam by resolution, field of view and microphone, and choose speakers by connection and power. For meetings and classrooms, the room and the lighting affect quality as much as the device does.

    Resolution
720p is the minimum for video calls, and 1080p at 30 frames per second gives a sharper image for meetings and teaching. Many meeting apps limit video quality, so a higher resolution adds little on a limited connection.
    Field of view
A narrow view of about 65 to 80 degrees suits one person at a desk. A wider view of about 90 degrees fits several people in a small meeting room.
    Autofocus and low light
Autofocus keeps the speaker sharp as they move. Light correction helps in dim rooms, though a lamp in front of the speaker helps more.
    Microphone
A built-in microphone suits one person near the camera. For a larger room use a conference speakerphone or a separate microphone.
    Connection
USB webcams are plug and play on current versions of Windows. Check the cable length if you plan to mount the camera on a large display.
    Speakers
Check the output in watts RMS, the connection (3.5 mm, USB or Bluetooth) and whether power comes from the mains or USB. Stereo (2.0) speakers suit desks, and 2.1 sets add a subwoofer for music.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Place the webcam at eye level and light your face from the front. A bright window behind the speaker makes the face dark.
    • Select the camera and microphone in the meeting app's own settings. Apps often pick the laptop's built-in camera by default.
    • Cover the lens or unplug the camera when it is not in use.
