    Choosing DVRs

    A DVR records HD analog cameras connected over coaxial cable. Match its channel count and maximum resolution to the cameras, and leave spare channels for expansion.

    Channel count
    Models are 4, 8, 16 and 32 channel. Choose a size larger than today's camera count where the site may grow.
    Maximum resolution
    DVRs here are 2 MP or 5 MP. The recorder's maximum should equal or exceed the cameras', otherwise a 5 MP camera on a 2 MP channel may show no picture.
    Signal formats
    Most of these DVRs detect HDCVI, AHD, TVI and CVBS cameras on each channel, so mixed analog HD cameras can usually share one recorder. Check that the resolution you plan to run is supported in each format.
    HDD bay and capacity
    Most models have a single SATA bay, and the maximum drive size is 6 TB or 16 TB depending on the model. A single bay limits retention and has no redundancy, so work out the days of recording first.
    IP camera inputs
    Some models accept a few IP cameras by converting analog channels to IP channels, which helps when you upgrade a site in stages. Check how many IP channels, and how much bandwidth, the model allows.
    Audio
    Audio over coaxial cable needs matching audio inputs on the DVR. Two-way audio works only with the two-way audio models and compatible cameras.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Use surveillance-rated drives in DVRs and NVRs for continuous recording.
    • Power the DVR from its own 12 V adapter, 1.5 to 2 A on these models, and power the cameras from a separate CCTV supply.
    • Leave space around the DVR for airflow and keep it out of closed boxes, because heat shortens drive life.
    • Set a strong admin password and do not expose the DVR to the internet with port forwarding. Use the maker's cloud service or a VPN for remote viewing.
