    Choosing graphics cards

Choose a graphics card for the work it must do, then check that the cabinet, power supply and monitor suit it. The GPU and memory decide performance, while card length, thickness and power connectors decide whether it fits.

    GPU and memory
Within one generation, a higher model number has more shader cores and faster memory. RTX 5050 and 5060 suit 1080p, 5060 Ti and 5070 suit 1440p, and 5070 Ti and 5080 suit 4K. More memory, 8 GB, 12 GB or 16 GB, helps with high-detail textures, video editing and rendering.
    Card length and thickness
Cards in this range run from about 200 mm to 360 mm long and from 40 mm to 75 mm thick, which is two to nearly four expansion slots. Compare these with the cabinet's maximum graphics card length, and allow for any front radiator or fan.
    Power supply and connectors
Check the recommended PSU wattage on the datasheet, which runs from 300 W for entry cards to 850 W for RTX 5080 cards. Confirm that the supply has the connector the card needs: 8-pin PCIe, or the 16-pin 12V-2x6 connector used on RTX 50 series cards.
    Display outputs
RTX 50 series cards have DisplayPort 2.1b and HDMI 2.1b outputs, and RTX 30 series cards have DisplayPort 1.4a and HDMI 2.1. Count the outputs for your monitors, and check that the monitor inputs support the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use.
    Low profile and entry cards
Slim desktops need a low-profile card with a low-profile bracket. Entry cards such as the GT 710 and GT 1030 suit basic display and office use, and some need no extra power connector.
    Series and editions
Within one GPU, series differ in cooler size, factory clock speed and finish, not in the GPU itself. White editions match white cabinets, and larger coolers are longer and heavier.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Support heavy cards with a bracket or stand to stop the board sagging, and remove any stand before moving the PC.
    • Seat the 16-pin connector fully and avoid sharp bends close to it. Use a separate PCIe cable for each 8-pin connector instead of a daisy chain.
    • Install the latest driver from the GPU maker after fitting the card, and check that the cabinet has clear intake and exhaust airflow.
