Choosing antivirus
Choose an antivirus licence by the number of devices, the operating systems to cover and whether you need central management. Licences are per device and per term, so match the count to the machines in use.
- Devices and users
- Licences are sold for a set number of devices. Count desktops, laptops and servers, and keep a few spare for replacements.
- Licence term
- Licences run for one or more years. Protection stops updating when the licence ends, so set a renewal reminder.
- Platform support
- Check support for your Windows versions, macOS and Android, and whether servers are covered. A system whose operating system no longer receives updates stays at risk whatever antivirus runs on it.
- Home or business
- Home editions protect individual PCs. Business or endpoint editions add a console to install, update and report on many PCs centrally.
- System load
- Check the minimum RAM and processor requirements, especially on older PCs, because security software slows low-specification machines.
- Features
- Core protection covers real-time scanning, web protection and email scanning. Firewall, USB control, ransomware protection and parental controls vary by edition.
Installation and compatibility
- Remove any existing antivirus before installing another. Two real-time scanners conflict and slow the PC.
- Update the definitions after installation and run a full scan.
- Antivirus does not replace patching or backups. Keep Windows updated and keep a backup copy offline.
