    Choosing NVRs

Choose an NVR by the number of cameras, their combined bitrate and the storage you need for the retention period. Channel count alone does not tell you whether a recorder can handle your cameras.

    Channel count
Models run from 4 to 128 channels. Choose the next size up from the camera count where you expect to add cameras, so the recorder does not need replacing.
    Incoming bandwidth
Each recorder has a maximum incoming bandwidth, from 80 Mbps to 384 Mbps in this range, shared by every camera. Add up the configured bitrate of each camera. On AI models, turning on analytics can lower the usable bandwidth.
    Camera resolution and decoding
Check the maximum camera resolution, 8 MP, 12 MP or up to 32 MP, and the decoding capacity, which limits how many high-resolution channels can be viewed or played back at once.
    HDD bays and capacity
Bays range from 1 to 8 SATA, and the maximum drive size runs from 8 TB to 20 TB per bay depending on the model. More bays give more days of storage, and selected multi-bay models support disk groups and RAID.
    Standard or AI series
Project (AI) models add face detection, perimeter protection and people or vehicle search on the recorder. Standard models cover recording, playback and smart motion detection, so choose AI only where the cameras and the job need it.
    Camera power
These recorders have no built-in PoE ports, so cameras connect through a PoE switch on the same network. Use a Gigabit link between the switch and the recorder.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Use surveillance-rated drives in NVRs and DVRs for continuous recording. Desktop drives are not designed for round-the-clock writing.
    • Plan storage from bitrate: a 1 Mbps stream recorded continuously uses about 10.8 GB a day, so a 4 Mbps camera uses about 1.3 TB in 30 days. The CCTV storage calculator in Tools does the sum for a whole site.
    • Put the recorder, switch and router on a UPS so that a power cut does not interrupt recording or damage the disks.
    • Set a strong admin password, and do not expose the recorder to the internet with port forwarding. Use the maker's cloud service or a VPN for remote viewing.
