    Choosing CCTV power supplies

    A CCTV power supply has to deliver enough current at the far end of every cable, not only at the supply. Size it from the cameras' maximum draw, add headroom, then choose between one large supply and several smaller outputs.

    Total current
    Add up the maximum current of every camera at 12 V, including IR, which is watts divided by 12. Keep the total at or below about 80% of the supply's rating.
    Single output or multi-channel
    Single-output metal supplies (12 V 5 A, 10 A and 20 A) feed many cameras from one point, usually through a fused distribution board. Multi-channel supplies (4, 8 and 16 channel) give each camera its own output and indicator, which makes faults easier to find.
    Voltage drop
    A small voltage loss in a long cable can stop IR or a camera working. Supplies with an adjustable output, about 11.4 to 12.6 V, let you compensate for the drop, but set the voltage by measuring at the camera, not at the supply.
    Enclosure
    Metal supplies shed heat better and suit higher loads. Plastic multi-channel units suit small groups of cameras indoors, with free air around them.
    Input range and protection
    Input ranges are narrow, about 190 to 250 V AC on these units, so feed them through a UPS or stabiliser where mains voltage varies. Look for over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit protection.
    Plug-in adapters
    The 12 V 2 A and 12 V 3 A adapters are listed for 4 and 8 channel and for 16 and 32 channel systems respectively. Check the figures against the load before relying on one.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Allow for inrush current at switch-on, which can be 40 A or more on the larger units, when you choose the MCB and the UPS.
    • Check polarity before connecting. Reversed polarity can destroy a camera.
    • Earth metal supplies, mount them where air can circulate, and keep DC cables apart from mains cables.
