Choosing cables
Use 3+1 coaxial cable for analog HD cameras and Cat6 UTP for IP cameras and networks. Conductor material, jacket and run length decide how a cable performs over the life of the installation, so settle those first.
- Cable type
- 3+1 coaxial cable has one coaxial video core and three power cores, so a single cable carries video and 12 V power to an analog HD camera. Cat6 UTP has four twisted pairs that carry data and, through a PoE switch, power to an IP camera.
- Conductor material
- Bare copper carries signal and power further, with less loss, than copper-clad aluminium (CCA). CCA is lighter but has higher resistance, so avoid it for long runs and for PoE, and check the conductor material on the datasheet because some grades use it.
- Cat6 distance and gauge
- A Cat6 channel is limited to 100 m, made up of up to 90 m of fixed cable plus patch cords. 23 AWG conductors have lower resistance than 24 AWG, which helps PoE over longer runs.
- Jacket and armour
- Standard jackets are for indoor runs in conduit. Outdoor grades use a UV-resistant jacket for exposed runs, and double-jacket and armoured Cat6 add protection against moisture and mechanical damage, for example in underground conduit.
- Coil length
- 3+1 coaxial cable comes in 70 m, 90 m and 180 m coils, and Cat6 in 100 m coils and 305 m boxes. Plan so that each camera has one continuous length with no joins in the run.
Installation and compatibility
- As general guidance, HD analog signals travel a few hundred metres on good copper coaxial cable and less at higher resolutions. Test the longest run before cabling the rest of the site.
- Keep data and video cables away from mains cables and cross them at right angles. Do not bend Cat6 tighter than about four times the cable diameter, and do not over-tighten cable ties.
- Test every Cat6 run with a cable tester before connecting equipment, and terminate both ends to the same wiring standard, T568A or T568B.
