Choosing a memory module

Memory must match the platform: DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, and desktop and laptop modules are different sizes. After the type, capacity and speed decide how well the system handles its workload.

DDR4 or DDR5: The module type must match the motherboard. DDR4 and DDR5 have different notch positions and voltages, so they do not fit each other's slots. AM5 and LGA1851 boards take DDR5 only, AM4 takes DDR4 only, and LGA1700 boards take one or the other depending on the board.
Desktop or laptop: Desktop memory is full-size DIMM. Laptops and mini PCs use the shorter SO-DIMM, and the two are not interchangeable.
Capacity: 8 GB is the practical minimum for current office use. 16 GB suits most users with several applications open, and 32 GB or more suits editing, virtual machines and design work. Fit modules in pairs to run dual channel.
Speed: Higher rated speeds, such as DDR4-3200 or DDR5-5600 and above, help integrated graphics and some workloads. The processor and board set the maximum speed they will run, and a faster kit runs at that limit.
Kits and matching: Buy matched kits, which are modules sold together. Mixing modules of different speeds or makers makes the faster modules run at the slower module's settings and can cause instability.

Installation and compatibility

Press each module in until both clips lock. Use the slots named in the motherboard manual for dual channel, usually the second and fourth.
Enable the XMP or EXPO profile in the BIOS so that the memory runs at its rated speed. For high-speed kits, check the motherboard's memory support list.
A new DDR5 system can take a few minutes on first start to train the memory. Wait before assuming a fault.
