    Choosing racks

Choose a wall-mount rack for the equipment it must hold now plus space for growth, then check depth, ventilation and cable entry. Models in this range run from 2U to 15U.

    Height in U
One U is 44.45 mm of vertical space. Add up the units for the recorder, PoE switch, patch panel and any shelf, then add 20 to 30% spare for growth.
    Depth and width
Check the internal depth against the deepest device, including space behind it for cable bends. Rack equipment is 19 inch wide, so confirm that the rack takes 19 inch mounting, and use a shelf for desktop-style devices.
    Ventilation
Switches, recorders and UPS units give off heat. Choose a rack with a perforated door or fan provision where several active devices share it, and leave space around the rack.
    Weight and mounting
Add up the weight of recorders with drives, switches, a UPS and cable, and fix the rack to a solid wall with anchors suited to the wall material. Put heavy items such as a UPS at the bottom, or in a floor-standing rack.
    Cable entry and lock
Check the cable entry points, the door lock and whether a power strip fits inside, so that the rack stays tidy and secure.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Fit blanking panels or leave a 1U gap between hot devices, and keep the rack out of closed cupboards.
    • Label both ends of each cable and leave slack for moving equipment. Do not bend patch cords tightly behind the equipment.
    • Power the rack through a surge-protected strip, and put the recorder and switch on a UPS.
