    Choosing PC accessories

PC accessories cover adapters, hubs, cables, chargers and desk items. The most common problem is a mismatch of connector or standard, so check the port types at both ends before you choose.

    Connector and version
Check the exact connector, USB-A or USB-C and HDMI or DisplayPort, and the version, such as USB 2.0, USB 3.2 or HDMI 2.0. The version sets the speed and resolution that a cable or adapter can carry.
    USB hubs
A hub shares the bandwidth of the one port it plugs into. Use a powered hub for external drives and other devices that draw more than a port can give, which is 500 mA on USB 2.0 and 900 mA on USB 3.0.
    Cable length
USB 2.0 cables work reliably to about 5 m, and USB 3.x cables to about 3 m. Passive HDMI cables work to about 10 m, and longer runs need active cables or extenders.
    Chargers and adapters
A replacement laptop charger must match the voltage and connector of the original, and its wattage must be equal or higher. Check polarity on barrel connectors.
    Power strips
Check the strip's rated current and total load, and the joule rating for surge protection. Do not plug one strip into another.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Choose cables that state their standard, such as USB 3.2 Gen 2 or HDMI 2.1, instead of relying on the shape of the connector.
    • Keep a spare cable and adapter for counters and meeting rooms where a failure stops work.
