    Choosing SSDs

    Choose an SSD by the interface your computer supports, then by capacity and endurance. SATA and NVMe drives can look alike on a spec sheet but fit different slots.

    Interface
    2.5 inch SATA drives work in nearly every desktop and laptop and top out at about 550 MB/s. NVMe drives in M.2 form need an M.2 slot with PCIe lanes and are several times faster.
    M.2 slot type
    M.2 slots can be SATA, NVMe or both, and modules come in different lengths, most often 2280 (22 x 80 mm). An NVMe drive will not work in an M.2 slot that supports SATA only.
    PCIe generation
    PCIe 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 drives work in older slots at the slot's speed. The faster generations matter mainly for large file transfers, and for everyday work any NVMe drive is a large step up from a hard drive.
    Capacity and endurance
    Endurance is rated in TBW (terabytes written), and larger drives have higher ratings. 256 GB is a small minimum for Windows and applications, and 512 GB to 1 TB is more comfortable.
    Heat
    NVMe drives can slow down under long, heavy writes without airflow. Many motherboards include an M.2 heatsink, which must be fitted over the drive with its thermal pad.
    Use in recorders
    Recorders are designed around surveillance hard drives. Do not fit consumer SSDs in a DVR or NVR for continuous recording unless the recorder's manual allows it.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Leave 10 to 20% of the drive free, because SSDs keep their speed and wear evenly when they have spare space.
    • Back up important data. An SSD failure can be sudden, with little warning.
    • Check the storage mode in the BIOS before installing Windows. Switching between AHCI and RAID modes afterwards can stop Windows from booting.
