    Choosing a keyboard or mouse

Choose keyboards and mice by how they connect, how many hours they are used each day and how much handling they take. Wired devices are the simplest choice for billing counters and shared PCs.

    Wired or wireless
Wired devices need no batteries or pairing. Wireless devices reduce cable clutter, with a 2.4 GHz USB receiver as the simplest option and Bluetooth saving a port on laptops and tablets.
    Connector
Most wired devices are USB-A. Some billing systems still use PS/2 keyboards, and PS/2 and USB ports are not interchangeable without an adapter, so check the port on the PC first.
    Keyboard layout
Full-size keyboards include a number pad, which billing and data entry work needs. Compact layouts save desk space but drop it, and key travel and noise matter over long typing sessions.
    Mouse sensor and size
Optical sensors of 1000 to 1600 DPI suit office use. Choose a size that fits the hand, because a mouse that is too small causes strain over a full day.
    Battery life
Wireless devices use AA or AAA cells or a rechargeable battery. Check the rated battery life and keep a spare set at counters.
    Combos
A keyboard and mouse combo shares one USB receiver, which saves a port and speeds up setup.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Plug the receiver into a front or side USB port close to the mouse. A receiver behind a metal case has a weaker signal, so use a short USB extension if needed.
    • Clean keyboards with a slightly damp cloth, never with liquid poured on. Counters where drinks are served need a spill-resistant model.
