    Choosing monitors

    Choose a monitor by what it will display and for how many hours a day. For office, accounts and CCTV viewing, size, resolution and panel type affect comfort and clarity more than refresh rate does.

    Size and resolution
    Full HD (1920 x 1080) suits 21.5 to 24 inch screens. At 27 inches, QHD (2560 x 1440) looks sharper, and 4K suits detailed work on 27 inches and above.
    Panel type
    IPS panels have wider viewing angles and steadier colour, and VA panels have higher contrast. TN panels respond quickly, but their colour shifts more when you view them from an angle.
    Ports
    Check for HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA to match the computer or recorder. For CCTV viewing, match the monitor's input to the recorder's output, and note that a 4K recorder output needs a 4K HDMI input to show full resolution.
    Refresh rate
    60 Hz and 75 Hz suit office and CCTV use. Rates of 120 Hz and above matter mainly for fast games.
    Stand, mounting and comfort
    Check the stand's height and tilt adjustment, and the VESA mounting pattern, usually 75 x 75 mm or 100 x 100 mm, if you want a wall or arm mount. Flicker-free backlighting and a low blue light mode help over long hours.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Use the cable supplied, or a certified HDMI or DisplayPort cable, and set the monitor's native resolution in the operating system to avoid a soft picture.
    • For CCTV display, set the recorder's output to the monitor's native resolution, and avoid VGA adapters where HDMI is available.
    • A monitor that shows CCTV all day wears faster. Use its power saving or a timer where the display is not needed overnight.
